Hear Her Sports Glenville is a neighborhood stories project sharing the power of sports for girls, women, and communities and is a creation by local Cleveland artist Elizabeth Emery.

100 girls and women who grew up, live or work in Cleveland’s Glenville neighborhood tell their stories about sports, breaking boundaries, religion, history, and hope.

Participants include Glenville Panthers cheer champions, seniors at Glenville Recreation Center, a boxing National Champion, Boys & Girls Club basketball players, a Zumba instructor, and others.

These conversations have a backdrop of political and social unrest, plus Cleveland’s own decline and development. Hear Her Sports Glenville believes in the positive effects of sports for girls and women and on the community.

Elizabeth Emery is a sculptor whose work is about breaking boundaries and the tension of that containment. She also hosts and produces Hear Her Sports, a podcast in which female athletes share secrets and discuss the amazing power of speaking up and living with the confidence that participation in sports has given them.

For the duration of FRONT, Emery will install three listening stations around Cleveland

The theme her sculptural work is about breaking boundaries and the tension of that containment.

These ideas are directly related to her podcast Hear Her Sports where female athletes share secrets to speak up, live with power and confidence and do amazing things. This project originally began as a series of multi-colored screen prints looking at the lack of media coverage of women in sports.
